fermata is a fashion brand which seeks to showcase the selfie as a potentially radical form of archival and broadcasting.
situated within neoliberal virtual attention economies, selfies have been characterized as ‘narcissistic,’ and as ‘cries for help.’ we argue for the selfie as a form of preservation, a strategy of being which fashions identity as a changeable and relational domain of aesthetic possibility: a mutual performance which, while dependent on the logic of the image and the structure of data in financial capitalism, may present a challenge to normative logics of beauty, identity, success, etc.
in other words, fermata seeks to be a gallery of ‘snapshots’ of the ongoing performance of identity. since identity is articulated through curated consumption choices, and since anyone with a portable camera can take a selfie, fermata believes the selfie is an ideal genre of image for fashion. not fashion as industry, but fashion as the ongoing fashioning of self, as a site of questioning, imagining, and experimenting with the body’s limitations.
fermata is an intersectional feminist brand and welcomes all submissions from all people. our fashion sense is all-inclusive. and we will always consider animal selfies. fermata defines ‘selfie’ as ‘articulation of context-contingent identity.’ selfies, as fossils of an everchanging, unreachable ideal self, are inherently performative and experimental, and, though situated within images, can incorporate any medium and express any feeling. we welcome selfie photos along with all other media. we orient the selfie as a facet of the gesamtkunstwerk, the body of creative archival that a human fashions in trying to live her life the way she sees fit.
fermata sees fashion as an all-inclusive genre of images which serves as a record of the changing self.fermata is interested in fashion as a performance whose material constraints are unique and specific to each body with a mobile camera, and fermata seeks to be an archive which stands as a direct confrontation to the normative logics of money and image in ‘high fashion.’
in documenting the inclusiveness, richness and ephemerality of fashion performance on the internet,fermata explicitly stakes its claim: selfies are the future of fashion.
